Carmel Riesling, Kayoumi Vineyard 2010
09.07.2011
A new release from Carmel Winery, produced under the Carmel Single Vineyard label. Carmel Riesling is made 100% from White Riesling (aka Johannisberg Riesling) grapes grown in the high altitude, cool climate Kayoumi vineyard. Kayoumi is situated in the foothills of Mount Meron in the Upper Galilee at an altitude of 780 meters above sea level. Kayoumi is a special, unique vineyard already known for producing award winning red wines. The Riesling is planted on the upper slopes of the vineyard, which backs onto Kadita.
The decision was taken to harvest relatively early to ensure good natural acidity. The grapes were night harvested and immediately taken to the nearby Kayoumi Winery at Ramat Dalton for pressing. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks at cold temperatures to preserve the delicate aromas. The wine was bottled early and left to age in bottle for 6-7 months before release to gain complexity.
Carmel Riesling 2010 is pale straw in color, with greenish flecks. It has 5 grams per liter residual sugar and so qualifies as off dry. (In Israel 4 g/l is dry). The wine has a wonderfully fragrant but delicate nose of citrus blossom, green apple and lime. It has a very prominent acidity, which gives it a very long, clean, refreshing finish.
